Jose "Joe" Barerra, Ph.D.

Joe Barrera is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, with front-line experience on the Laotian-Cambodian borders during the Battle of Dak To and the Tet Offensive.

He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Texas at Austin. 

Joe has taught American literature, Chicano/a Literature, U.S. Southwest 

Culture, Mexico/U.S. Border Studies, American Ethnic Studies, American 

History, and American Multiculturalism. He is a frequent lecturer on these 

topics to both academic and lay audiences.

Joe Barrera is the former director of the Ethnic Studies Program at the University

of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and is now the editor and publisher of

La Revista Almagre/The Almagre Review, an online literary magazine dedicated

to publishing fiction, poetry, drama, and political essays by writers in Colorado

and the western United States. The Almagre Review has published issues with the

creative work of Chicano/a writers and work by U.S. military veterans.
